The medic upgrade will only work the medic class and the weapon specialist upgrade will only work for the weapon specialist. I'm having difficulty upgrading to the latest firmware, and I don't seem to be able to fully follow the guides here because of what is in the ZIP file I've downloaded. However, you do have to follow it to the letter and get the hardware key combinations correct to enter recovery. If I then place the upgrade ZIP on the SD card or internal storage, nothing happens.
