In my case, I had to disable "native SATA mode" in the bios and that did it.

That's a bit tricky to answer, as there are a substantial number of different ways to approach that question. Microsoft has help on that here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/clean-install You may need to go back to your laptop maker for specific help for getting your hands on Windows install media!
